The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error when extracting a file with the "-N" flag using "gunzip". This makes it possible to have a file extracted to an arbitrary location outside the current directory via directory traversal attacks. The vulnerability has been reported in version 1.2.4, 1.2.4a, 1.3.3, 1.3.4 and 1.3.5. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Do not extract untrusted ".gz" files with the "-N" flag.
