TITLE: osh Two Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA14159 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/14159/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system REVISION: 2.0 originally posted 2005-02-08 SOFTWARE: osh 1.x http://secunia.com/product/1750/ DESCRIPTION: Two vulnerabilities have been reported in osh, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. 1) A boundary error exists in the function "iopen()" in "main.c" and can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow by supplying an overly long argument. Example: "/usr/sbin/osh exit [more than 1024 bytes]" 2) A boundary error exists in the "writable()" function in handlers.c and can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow by running osh from a directory with a directory name of more than 255 bytes. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code with root privileges. The vulnerabilities have been reported in version 1.7. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: This product is being maintained as a Debian package and patches are available from Debian. The vulnerabilities have been fixed in version 1.7-14. http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/o/osh/osh_1.7-14.diff.gz PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: 1) Charles Stevenson 2) Solar Eclipse CHANGELOG: 2005-08-16: Added information about additional vulnerability. 2005-11-10: Updated "Solution Status", "Solution" and "Original Advisory" sections.
