TITLE: PHP Web Statistik Multiple Vulnerabilities and Security Issue SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA17789 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/17789/ CRITICAL: Moderately critical IMPACT: Cross Site Scripting, Exposure of system information, DoS WHERE: >From remote SOFTWARE: PHP Web Statistik 1.x http://secunia.com/product/6262/ DESCRIPTION: Francesco "aScii" Ongaro has discovered some vulnerabilities and a security issue in PHP Web Statistik, which can be exploited by malicious people to disclose system information, cause a DoS (Denial of Service), and conduct cross-site scripting and script insertion attacks. 1) Input passed to the "lastnumber" parameter in "stat.php" isn't properly sanitised before being returned to the user. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in context of an affected site. 2) The problem is that the configuration and log database files are insecurely stored inside the web root. This can be exploited to disclose certain configuration settings and logging information. 3) Input passed to the "lastnumber" parameter in "stat.php" isn't properly verified before being used in an loop statement. This can be exploited to consume a large amount of CPU resources on a vulnerable system via an overly large "lastnumber" parameter. 4) Input passed to the "referer" header isn't properly sanitised before being used. This can be exploited to inject arbitrary HTML and script code, which will be executed in a user's browser session in context of an affected site when the malicious user data is viewed. It has also been reported that the program does not rotate the log database. The vulnerabilities and the security issue have been confirmed in version 1.4.a and has also been reported in version 1.4. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised and verified. Move the configuration and log database files out of the web root.
