TITLE: ArcPad ".apm" Map File Handling Buffer Overflow SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA18294 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/18294/ CRITICAL: Moderately critical IMPACT: System access WHERE: >From remote SOFTWARE: ArcPad 7.x http://secunia.com/product/6739/ DESCRIPTION: bratax has discovered a vulnerability in ArcPad, which potentially can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when processing a ".apm" map file. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via an overly long value in the "string" attribute of the COORDSYS tag. Successful exploitation may allow arbitrary code execution but requires that the user is e.g. tricked into opening a specially crafted ".apm" file. The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 7.0.0.156 for Windows. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Do not open ".apm" files from non-trusted sources.
