TITLE: Petris Buffer Overflow Vulnerability SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA18362 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/18362/ CRITICAL: Not critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system SOFTWARE: Petris 1.x http://secunia.com/product/6763/ DESCRIPTION: Steve Kemp has reported a vulnerability in Petris, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the handling of environment variables when processing highscores. This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow. Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code with escalated privileges on systems, where the game has been installed setuid or setgid (typically setgid "games"). SOLUTION: Remove any setuid / setgid bits. Games should not be installed on production systems.
