TITLE: Serial Line Sniffer "HOME" Environment Variable Buffer Overflow SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA18497 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/18497/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system SOFTWARE: Serial Line Sniffer (slsnif) 0.x http://secunia.com/product/6832/ DESCRIPTION: Sintigan has discovered a vulnerability in Serial Line Sniffer (slsnif), which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in "readRC()" in the handling of the "HOME" environment variable. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow which potentially allows arbitrary code execution. Successful exploitation requires that slsnif is setuid root. The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 0.4.4. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Remove the suid bits from the binary.
