TITLE: noweb Insecure Temporary File Creation Vulnerabilities SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA18809 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/18809/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system SOFTWARE: noweb 2.x http://secunia.com/product/8035/ DESCRIPTION: Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña has reported multiple vulnerabilities in noweb, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions on a vulnerable system with escalated privileges. Temporary files are created insecurely in the "/tmp" directory by the "src/lib/toascii.nw" and "src/shell/roff.mm" scripts. This can be exploited via symlink attacks to create or overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the user running an affected script The vulnerabilities have been reported in versions 2.9a and 2.10c. Other versions may also be affected. The following priorly reported scripts are also still affected: * contrib/conrado/d2tex * contrib/norman/htmlgif/pstopbm * contrib/jobling/correct-refs.nw * src/awkname * src/awk/totex.nw * src/lib/toascii * contrib/rsc/rc/toascii.nw * contrib/rsc/rc/cpif.nw * src/shell/nonu * src/shell/roff.nw * src/shell/noroff * src/shell/toroff SOLUTION: Grant only trusted users access to affected systems.
