TITLE: Power Daemon WHATIDO syslog Format String Vulnerability SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA18841 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/18841/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: DoS, System access WHERE: >From remote SOFTWARE: Power Daemon (powerd) 2.x http://secunia.com/product/8023/ DESCRIPTION: Gotfault Security has discovered a vulnerability in Power Daemon (powerd), which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) and potentially compromise a vulnerable system. The vulnerability is caused due to a format string error in powerd.c when logging input received via the "WHATIDO" command. This can be exploited to crash powerd and may allow arbitrary code execution. Successful exploitation requires that powerd is configured to send notification messages to a malicious host. The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 2.0.2. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Send notification messages to trusted hosts only.
