TITLE: avast! Insecure Temporary File Creation SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA19683 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/19683/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system SOFTWARE: avast! Linux Home Edition 1.x http://secunia.com/product/9378/ DESCRIPTION: Julian L. has reported a vulnerability in avast! Linux Home Edition, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions on a vulnerable system with escalated privileges. When performing a virus scanning, the program checks for the presence of a specific folder in the "/tmp" directory. If this folder is not present, it is created with insecure permissions, which can be exploited via symlink attacks to create, overwrite, or manipulate the permissions of arbitrary files on the system with the privileges of the user running the program. The vulnerability has been reported in version 1.0.5. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Grant only trusted users access to affected systems.
