TITLE: TrueCrypt External Command Execution Vulnerability SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA19903 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/19903/ CRITICAL: Less critical IMPACT: Privilege escalation WHERE: Local system SOFTWARE: TrueCrypt 4.x http://secunia.com/product/7610/ TrueCrypt 3.x http://secunia.com/product/8594/ TrueCrypt 2.x http://secunia.com/product/8593/ DESCRIPTION: Julien Tinnes has reported a vulnerability in Truecrypt, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges. The vulnerability is caused due to the unsafe use of the "execvp()" function to execute external commands without sanitising the user's current PATH settings. This can potentially be exploited by local users to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges via specially-crafted PATH settings. Successful exploitation requires that the root user has specified Truecrypt to be installed suid root during the installation process (non-default). The vulnerability has been reported in version 4.1. Prior versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Update to version 4.2. http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: Julien Tinnes ORIGINAL ADVISORY: http://lists.immunitysec.com/pipermail/dailydave/2006-April/003152.html TrueCrypt: http://www.truecrypt.org/history.php ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About: This Advisory was delivered by Secunia as a free service to help everybody keeping their systems up to date against the latest vulnerabilities.
