---------------------------------------------------------------------- To improve our services to our customers, we have made a number of additions to the Secunia Advisories and have started translating the advisories to German. The improvements will help our customers to get a better understanding of how we reached our conclusions, how it was rated, our thoughts on exploitation, attack vectors, and scenarios. This includes: * Reason for rating * Extended description * Extended solution * Exploit code or links to exploit code * Deep links Read the full description: http://corporate.secunia.com/products/48/?r=l Contact Secunia Sales for more information: http://corporate.secunia.com/how_to_buy/15/?r=l ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Links "smb" Protocol File Upload/Download Vulnerability SECUNIA ADVISORY ID: SA22905 VERIFY ADVISORY: http://secunia.com/advisories/22905/ CRITICAL: Moderately critical IMPACT: Manipulation of data, Exposure of system information, Exposure of sensitive information WHERE: >From local network SOFTWARE: Links 0.x http://secunia.com/product/12624/ DESCRIPTION: Teemu Salmela has discovered a vulnerability in Links, which can be exploited by malicious people to expose sensitive information and manipulate data. The vulnerability is caused due to an error in the validation of "smb://" URLs when Links runs smbclient commands. This can be exploited to download and overwrite local files or upload local files to a SMB share by injecting smbclient commands in the "smb://" URL. Successful exploitation allows exposure of sensitive information or manipulation of data, but requires that the user visits a malicious "smb://" URL or gets redirected to such an URL by a malicious URL, and that the user has the smbclient program installed. The vulnerability is confirmed in version 0.99 on the 0.x branch but not in version 2.0 on the 2.x branch. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Don't visit untrusted web sites. Implement restrictive firewall rules for SMB traffic. Uninstall the smbclient program from systems where it is not needed.
