DESCRIPTION:
Smålandstomte has discovered some vulnerabilities in chetcpasswd,
which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated
privileges.

The vulnerabilities are caused due to insecure execution of external
programs when copying new passwd files to old passwd files after
changing the password, and when configured to use "post_change" and
"alert_email".

Successful exploitation grants root privileges, but requires a valid
shell account on the web server and the knowledge of one IP address
that is allowed to use chetcpasswd.

The vulnerabilities are confirmed in version 2.4.1. Other versions
may also be affected.

SOLUTION:
Do not grant untrusted users access to affected systems.
