Rude II has reported a vulnerability in VeriSign's ConfigChk ActiveX control, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system. The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the ConfigChk ActiveX control (VSCnfChk.dll) when processing arguments passed to the VerCompare() method. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based based buffer overflow via an overly long (greater than 28 bytes) string passed as argument to the said method. Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code but requires that the user is e.g. tricked into visiting a malicious web site. The vulnerability is reported in version 2.0.0.2. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Apply patches. PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: David D.
