The security issue is caused due to an error when checking the credentials during login, which can be exploited to log in to an account (potentially including "root") without specifying a valid password. Successful exploitation may require special circumstances, e.g. that "autologin" and "shutdown with password" are enabled. The security issue is reported in versions 3.3.0 through 3.5.7. SOLUTION: Apply patches. KDE 3.5.0 through 3.5.7: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/security_patches/post-3.5.7-kdebase-kdm.diff KDE 3.3.0 through 3.4.2: ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/security_patches/post-3.4.2-kdebase-kdm.diff PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: The vendor credits Kees Huijgen.
