The vulnerabilities are caused due to the "filetype.vim", "tar.vim", "zip.vim", "xpm.vim", "xpm2.vim", "gzip.vim", and "netrw.vim" scripts improperly escaping special characters contained within filenames passed to the "execute" statement. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary commands on an affected system by tricking the user into opening specially crafted files. The vulnerabilities are reported in versions 6.4 and 7.1.298. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Do not open untrusted files using Vim. The vendor recommends applying patch 7.1.299 and updating to the latest runtime files, which fix some of the reported vulnerabilities. ftp://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/patches/7.1/7.1.299 http://www.vim.org/runtime.php PROVIDED AND/OR DISCOVERED BY: Jan Minar ORIGINAL ADVISORY: Jan Minar: http://www.rdancer.org/vulnerablevim.html http://seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2008/Jun/0192.html ---------------------------------------------------------------------- About: This Advisory was delivered by Secunia as a free service to help everybody keeping their systems up to date against the latest vulnerabilities.
