The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the "GetStatsFromLine()" function in engine/tpcommon.c (version 3.x) or src/net/tpcommon.cpp (version 5.x) when processing STATS lines containing an overly long "email" or "pwd" tag field. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow by sending a specially crafted STATS line to a vulnerable server. The vulnerability is confirmed in version 3.1.7 and reported in 5.02. Other versions may also be affected. SOLUTION: Restrict access to trusted users only.
