-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- =========================================================================== A U S C E R T A L E R T AL-1999.003 -- AUSCERT ALERT June 18 DoS threat 07 June 1999 =========================================================================== We are writing to you to notify you of the possibility of denial of service attacks on June 18. We would like to stress that this notification is based on information received from a third party, and that we have not been able to independently substantiate this information. However, in the interests of erring on the side of caution we felt it prudent to send out this informal warning to our members. The information that we have received suggests that a number of organisations throughout the world will take part in a series of coordinated protest events (known as J18) during 18 June 1999. Our understanding is that some of these groups may be planning denial of service attacks over the Internet, most particularly against large financial organisations within the G8 countries. There are no further available details about the exact source or technical details of the activity. While we have no information available to confirm any individual targets we believe that all AusCERT member sites should be aware of a potential threat on that day. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- [AusCERT issues an alert when the risk posed by a vulnerability that may not have been thoroughly investigated and for which a work-around or fix may not yet have been developed requires notification.] The AusCERT team has made every effort to ensure that the information contained in this document is accurate at the time of publication.
