MCI Data Systems Division internetMCI Security Group Incident Response Advisory Report Name: Good Times Virus Alert - Second Distribution Report Number: iMCISE:MIIGS:GTV:0421:95:2ND Report Date: 4/21/95 Report Format: Summary Report Classification: Distribution Unlimited Report Distribution: On File ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please be advised that the internetMCI Security Department is receiving reports again on information of the "Good Times Virus". The "Good Times Virus" is a HOAX, a practical joke initiated by unknown individuals several months ago, by sending hundreds of faxes and emails to busniesses using, among others, FCC letterhead in order to cause massive paranoia. The "Good Times Virus" threat is not real, and does not affect your ability to retrieve and read email messages in the same fashion that you have always done. Altough there are ways to transport virus code in email messages they can not be extracted by simply reading the message. In almost all cases, executable code in email messages must be added as an attachment, and can only be executed automatically by enhanced mailers. To date, there have been no reported cases of sucessfully sending malicious code to self-extract and execute via email. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or my department.
