From: Casper Boden-CumminsDate: Thu Oct 31 14:17:15 GMT 1996 I'm a programmer & system administrator. I work almost exclusively in UNIX, with about 6 years' experience. Where money's concerned, I program mostly in INFORMIX-4GL, a fourth generation language for relational database applications. Recently, I've committed myself to the system administration role, since it's a whole lot more interesting than programming business app's to spec'. I write shell scripts (k/sh) at every opportunity, and use UNIX utilities with relish. I enjoy combining the power of the shell with tools like [gn]awk, sed and the myriad other nifty filters and utilities available, and look forward to picking up one of the more up-to-date awk replacements such as perl or python. Probably the most complex sed script I wrote before joining seders doesn't amount to much: a basic formatter to take the output of ls -lR and indent each subdirectory according to its depth. It was more a challenge to see in how few commands it could be done. I've learnt a great deal about sed since joining seders, and have even been persuaded now to run some crazy sed site. sed is a perfectly bizarre utility, but it's fast and surprisingly powerful (rather like a Turing Machine...). If someone asked me to switch to another washing powder, I think I'd refuse outright. Casper Boden-Cummins, bodec@sherwood.co.uk.
